Jesus predicts his death and resurrection three times in the Gospel of Mark. Each time his disciples fail to understand, which leads to Jesus explaining what following Him means for them. In His first prediction, Jesus explains that anyone who wants to follow Him must both deny themselves and embrace Him, no matter where He leads. While this seems daunting, Jesus explains that in laying down our lives, we gain His life in us; and in surrendering control over our lives we are free to recieve an eternal status and security from Him.
