Religious leaders accuse Jesus of breaking the Torah by permitting his disciples to ignore hand washing rituals before eating. Jesus responds that their traditions are not equal to the commands of God. They break God’s commands for the sake of their traditions. Further, it isn’t what you put in your mouth that defiles; It’s what issues out of your heart. He reveals that love for God and others has been at the heart of the Torah all along. This is the kind of purity God is ultimately concerned with a purity rooted in a transformed heart that fully loves God and loves others. This is what Jesus makes possible.
