The beginning of Matthew 14 recounts how and why John the Baptist was killed. The events surrounding his death are violent, tragic, and unjust. John was faithful to the Lord and His life was fruitful; how could it end this way? Matthew’s description of John’s death closely parallels Jesus’s own death; it’s as if he’s saying, ‘something like this awaits Jesus.’ More importantly, it tells us that John’s death cannot be properly understood apart from Jesus’ death and resurrection, for apart from Jesus, his death is a tragic defeat of a faithful servant – but because he tethered his life to Christ, his destiny is tied to Jesus. Christ’s victory over sin, evil, and death belong to him as well.
