In this passage, the disciples are unable to heal a boy — not because they don’t care or don’t try (they do!), but because their faith is so small they don’t even pray. Jesus teaches them that even faith as small as a mustard seed, when directed toward God, is powerful enough to overcome the greatest obstacles. If we’re going to follow the way of Jesus, we have to give up self-reliance and embrace deep dependence — and prayer is how that trust finds its voice.
