We all want to be great. But one of the most counterintuitive of all Jesus’s teachings— that goes against everything we hear, and even the intuition of our own heart —is His teaching on greatness. For Jesus, the problem isn’t that we want to be great: it’s that the route we want to take towards greatness is mistaken. Jesus aims to redirect our ambition towards true greatness, and so as a good teacher does, Jesus uses an real tangible object lesson: a little child. If you want to be great in the kingdom of God, you must become like a little child.
